A Youth Charged in Fire in Shamattawa

Shamattawa police have arrested a youth in relation to the fire that burned down the community's only grocery store and their band office.

Six youths were involved in with setting the fire. Five of the youths are under the age of 12, which means they cannot be charged because the Youth Criminal Justice Act establishes the age of criminal responsibility at 12 years old. One youth, a 12 year old male, was arrested and released on a promise to appear.

The investigation is still ongoing as the Office of the Fire Commissioner is helping with the investigation.
